BMW 530i
2020

A 2020 BMW 530i xDrive I bought at a Copart salvage auction with front-end damage. With fees it came to $17,253, which is less than half the retail value the auction listed. I rebuilt the front end myself, the whole project came to about $21,000, and it's on a rebuilt title now.

Buying it at auction

It's a 2020 BMW 530i xDrive, from the G30 5 Series. It has the 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder and all-wheel drive. It's dark blue with cognac leather inside.

I bought it at a Copart salvage auction. It was lot 45686895 at the Baltimore East yard in Maryland, and it sold on June 26, 2025 for $15,300. With fees the bill of sale came to $17,253.

The auction record lists an estimated retail value of $37,156, so I paid less than half of that. It was listed with front-end damage, a Maryland salvage title and 38,332 miles, and as a car that runs and drives. I bought a Mazda CX-5 from Copart around the same time.

When it got home

It got home on July 8, 2025 with the lot sticker still on the windshield. All the damage was at the front. The bumper was split on the passenger side, the headlight on that side was broken, the grille was pushed in and the hood was creased. Under the hood, the front edge of the engine bay where the radiator support runs across was bent.

Fixing it

I did all the work on it myself. By August 22 the bumper, grille and headlights were off, so you could see the radiator and the bumper beam. I bought every part from China. Between August 24 and September 4 I ordered the structure parts, which were the front upper radiator support, the radiator support centre piece, the left and right radiator support cores, and two front hood latches.

The hood, bumper, grille and headlights that went back on were new parts from China too. On August 24 it also got an M-style steering wheel in place of the one it came with. The new one has red stitching, a red stripe at the top, carbon fibre trim and red M1 and M2 buttons.

The first drive and the finish

By September 8, 2025 it was back together, and that night it went out on its first test drive. It ran and drove.

After that came the finishing touches. I gave the painting to a painter I know, and once he'd painted it I polished it myself. It passed for a rebuilt title, and the whole project came to about $21,000. The auction listed it at $37,156.
