How to read itStep 03 is where benches fail. A joint strong in compression can still let the frame rack sideways, which is why bracing matters more than thickness.

01 / Context

Why this project exists

After building a box, I wanted something that had to hold up under load rather than just look square. A bench is the smallest honest version of that: simple enough to finish in a weekend, but with a real requirement that a person can sit on it repeatedly without it loosening.

02 / Approach

How the problem was framed

The design question is not whether the wood is strong enough, because it almost always is. It is whether the connections stay tight. Wood in compression is generous; wood joints under repeated side loading are not, and a bench spends its life being sat on off-center and dragged across a floor.

So the thinking went into the frame: how the seat transfers into the rails, how the rails resist twisting, and how the legs stay square to each other once the glue is the only thing holding the geometry. A bench also has to sit flat on a floor that is not flat, which is a fitting problem rather than a design one.

What exists now

The bench was built and is in use. As with the box, I do not yet have a verified record of species, dimensions, or joint type, so those are left out rather than guessed at.

Lessons and next steps

The lesson worth keeping is that stiffness and strength are different problems and the second one is easy. Making the parts thicker does very little for a frame that racks; changing how the joints resist rotation does a lot. That is the same conclusion structural work reaches, arrived at with a chisel rather than a solver.

The next one starts with a drawing, a stated load case, and a dry assembly before glue.
